I can't believe the comments here. You people are acting like the officer (or any complete stranger, for that matter) is supposed to know that the dog wasn't vicious. Dogs are just like people – unpredictable. There are professional dog trainers who will tell you that their job is not an exact science and they still get bitten sometimes. Are you seriously suggesting that the officer was obliged to endanger themselves physically just so you can have a chance to explain that the dog isn't dangerous? That's total garbage and everyone of you knows it.
If you don't want your dog getting shot, get a fence and keep it locked up. Don't have a fence? Don't get a dog, it's as simple as that. Pets are your responsibility, don't try and shirk that responsibility onto everyone else. Wake up to yourselves: this isn't the 50s anymore.

What a horrible thing this is, there was no reason to resort to deadly force and this officer is pure evil. Even the mail carrier has non lethal spray to use in a serious situation but this guy just kills the dog for doing its job of protecting his house and people. He just murdered a family member and created the very hate that our police departments tend to do. I pray for this family to get past this horrible thing and return to the normal cares in life.
