  1. DETAILS/Case Documents: https://thecivilrightslawyer.com/2025/01/07/cops-mistakenly-send-k9-to-attack-innocent-sleeping-man/
Derrick Williams was fast asleep in the apartment he had been living in for about a month (which was leased by a friend/Uncle) when he heard a commotion outside his bedroom. It was the Chesterfield County (Virginia) Police Department, who had just opened the front door and sent in a police K9 to find him and violently attack him. But it was a mistake. He had done nothing wrong. His friend/Uncle's ex-girlfriend had come by earlier to collect some belongings, saw him asleep in the apartment, and called 911, believing he was an intruder of some sort. Instead of realizing that Derrick was not an intruder, they just went full send with their attack K9, to bite first, and ask questions later. Now a lawsuit has been filed. But the cops are asking for qualified immunity, claiming they did nothing wrong.

  2. A high school diploma or Ged to be a cop is all the education you need that's ridiculous for the level of human contact and lives they can have a big impact on like a doctor

  3. My friends brother was passenger for his friend on a drug buy. PD sent their dog in, the first on on the force with titanium caps on his teeth. He had his hands up from the moment they got lit up. City settled for $4 million. Cops weren’t held accountable. SoCal, about 15 years ago now IIRC.

  4. What's absolutely crazy to me is the fact that cops can walk on to your property without a warrant and shoot your dog in the face for barking at them too much or getting a little too close with absolutely NO consequences whatsoever. Meanwhile a police K9 can wrongfully attack someone and that person can be charged with a FELONY for merely touching the dog and trying to get it to let go of them… It's so absurd.

  5. The dogs should be illegal. Even when they are used effectively, why can’t cops just do that job? What the hell are cops being paid for? To stand around and unleash an animal that’s been trained to maim people. Ridiculous.

  6. The most unaccountable humans in America, It's a disgusting american tragedy that police in this country can harm innocent people daily and face no consequences. Shameful America !

  7. I do not understand what kind of laws they have there. It appears so illogical to me. Cops should have done their due diligence in this case but it appears they have totally neglected which is negligence or they are totally incompetent. Either way, they should be civilly and administratively liable for what did to the man. The immunity of the state does extend to them.

  8. Good thing a child, senior citizen, or a disabled person wasn't in there or this would have ended a lot differently. I wonder what it takes for cops to be held accountable. They ALWAYS investigate themselves and find no wrong doing but if you did what they did you too, you'd spend SEVERAL YEARS in prison.

  9. If the police receive no negative consequences for this, it'll be a belated Christmas gift to all swatters, looking to use the police as a weapon against innocent people. Any policy or practice that allows the police to be exploited as a weapon in the hands of criminals needs to be prohibited. That's as much for the safety of the police; when the police are weapons wielded by criminals, people will have no choice other than defend themselves, by whatever means necessary.

Btw, it astounds me how poorly trained many police dogs are, in the US, and how incompetent their handlers are. In many countries, a dog that doesn't release immediately upon command would be taken out of service. Police dogs are supposed to act based on training, not on aggression.

  10. I do not "think" they do these things by mistake. I believe they do these things on purpose and for a purpose we just saw
It is no longer "protect and serve" it is " Harm and Control" that is what the majority of Police agencies have become in the US. Just another Government proxy used to control the masses

  11. I have a honest question:

Same situation as this guy. But instead of yelling he is bitting me, you stab or other wise fight back an bring death of major injury to the dog. If that happens what if any mare your rights???

  12. "He was in communication with the unknown person in the house" makes it sound like there was a dialog, communication requires more then just transmitting, it requires reception, and (usually) acknowledgement of the message. Dude was sleeping, there was no communication.

  13. In the addition to the fact that people may not actually raise animals to use to attack, the question becomes, what can be done to keep public servants from misusing animals in this way?

Obviously the issue of the dangerous animal is a factor, but it’s the person who releases the animal, and the choice to do so…

What if there’s a child in a room asleep?

  14. This is so upsetting to watch. They're permanently scarring people physically and mentally for no good reason in many cases. And they're abusing these wonderful canine creatures themselves, using them as a weapon.

  15. Soooo sick of these lazy arse, LEO. Act first think later. They couldnt verify her information? Why was she there if she moved out? Check with the person that still lived there? I know these are some deep and hard questions. It I assault a k-9 unit, then it is battery on a LEO, so then if the dog is attacking me unjustly, shouldnt it be police brutality? How hard would it be verify who might be living there? How did they think it was a dangerous situation? "The we didnt know" bs doesnt fly, because to me it's why didnt you find out? Do some damn work.
