And maybe it's always been this way but I think the police are a little bit different in the last 20 to 25 years or so or at least with the Advent of social media and smartphones with YouTube videos
Police officers are way more aggressive nowadays
And at the drop of a hat will pull you through the window of your car or escalate things well beyond what they should have been in the first place
And I'm saying that as a police officer I don't like the way policing is going in this country it's out of control we do need police reforms
In the academy they taught us the seven-step violator approach i
in that approach the officer is supposed to tell you the reason and violation for the traffic stop
A lot of these video situations come about because the police officer refuses to tell the person why he stopped them until he gets their driver's license from them
I have done that before I will not do it anymore because I see the trouble that it causes and how many police officers or most police officers I would say will just throw somebody in jail by saying that they refused to identify when I think it's very reasonable that they ask what the reason for the traffic stopped is I would want to know if I was being stopped
At my department they take complaints against officers very seriously and you will be dealt with as an officer by the internal affairs division if somebody files a complaint and it even looks like you might be in the wrong because my department values the Publix input and once their officers to be professional and courteous to the public and that is part of our policy as I'm sure it's almost in every other department's policy whether they follow that policy
also it is the policy of my department that we identify ourselves to members of the public if they ask us whether we encountered them or not somebody could just walk up to me and asked me my name and badge number or unit and I'm supposed to tell without giving them a hassle about it
And I have no problem with that because I think that's the way it should be done
