We don't need to defund the police. We need to INCREASE their funding to pay for ACTUAL police training in deescalation & constitutional rights, & to pay for a third person who is not a police officer but rather a constitutional law scholar to ALWAYS be present with a 2 officer patrol unit (that DOES NOT include female officers) who is the police officer's superior & will inform the officer's of how they are to engage in every situation lawfully.
The sheriff's office on my county, Walker Co Alabama were called for a welfare check on a young man who was having a psychotic episode, apparently from drug use. They promised the family they would get him some help, but instead they threw him in the "cold" room in January with no clothes, no bed, no blanket, no anything but a drain in the floor. He of course died of hypothermia. They said he was alive when they carried him to the hospital, after they gave him a hot shower to warm him up. There was a video of him being put into a deputy car for transport to the hospital and he looked unresponsive to me. He was in jail for two weeks. The ABI investigated and determined the young man was essentially murdered by the actions of the Walker County Sheriff's Department, but as of yet I have not heard of any firings, suspensions, or arrest in connection with this case. They told the family they would get him some help and all they did was put him in jail and abuse him until he died. The way I see it he was hard to handle so they punished him until he died. THE MAN NEEDED TO BE IN A MENTAL INSTITUTION. They had no right to administer any punishment. I hope they put them all in jail.
