It may have started as an investigation into the Jeep running but they expressly escalated it into an investigation in to domestic abuse so they get a lot more leeway with that in most states. The second that they had no legal justification to be there and he instructed them to get off his property and they refused. They are criminally trespassing at this point. This makes them no different than a burglar in my eyes. And the second that they started getting violent with law abiding citizens on their own property. In my mind at least I believe they would be completely justified in defending themselves from a bunch of armed men attempting to kidnap them and physically assault them
