Van life, or the lifestyle of living in a van or other small, mobile dwelling, has gained popularity in recent years as a way to live a more minimalist, nomadic lifestyle. However, van dwellers often face harassment and discrimination from law enforcement, who may view them as a nuisance or a threat to public safety.
One common form of police harassment faced by van dwellers is the threat of citation or arrest for “loitering” or “camping” in a public place. While living in a van may be a legitimate lifestyle choice, many local ordinances and laws criminalize the act of sleeping or residing in a vehicle on public property. As a result, van dwellers may find themselves constantly on the move, looking for a place to park and sleep for the night that is safe and legal.
Another form of police harassment that van dwellers may face is the threat of having their vehicles impounded or seized. In some cases, law enforcement may claim that a van is abandoned or that it poses a safety hazard, even if the van is being used as a primary residence. This can be especially problematic for van dwellers who may not have the financial means to get their vehicles back, or who rely on their vans for transportation and shelter.
Van dwellers may also face discrimination and stigma from the broader community, including neighbors and business owners who may view them as a nuisance or a blight on the neighborhood. This can lead to additional harassment and conflict with law enforcement, as van dwellers may be more likely to be reported or called out for alleged violations.
While it is important for law enforcement to maintain public safety and enforce local ordinances, it is also important to recognize and respect the rights of van dwellers and other alternative lifestyles. Harassment and discrimination against van dwellers is a violation of their basic human rights, and it is important for law enforcement and the broader community to work towards creating a more inclusive and accepting society.

  2. I think you would need to go through the trouble of being arrested to make enough money for a lawsuit to be worth it. There are a lot of these towns that have unconstitutional laws .

  3. The Washington police should worry about the drug addicts looting and urinating/crapping in the street leaving needles everywhere rather than bothering someone innocuous, minding their own business, parked legally off of private property. One more example of this country becoming a police state, where the government is overstepping their bounds and stepping all over constitutional rights.

  4. A year ago or two the Sedro cops killed a guy. There is video of it. You should check that out. The new cops in town are psychotic. They have threatened me personally and my family while looking for someone that didn't reside at my address.

  5. It would seem to me that the term "over-night" has to be defined. To me over-night would mean from sundown to sunup.

If I parked at 10pm and got back on the road about 5am I wouldn't be there "over-night". I would be there only part of the night.

  6. Tell me if you’re living in a free country… Tell me you’re not living in a police state… It’s no wonder the people are getting set up with police with government with totalitarianism in the guise of public safety… Fuck the government fuck the police you are supposed to be we the people for the people as opposed to control the people tax the people

  7. I would suggest that people who live out of their vehicles in the ninth circuit should carry a laminated copy of this decision so as to be able to quickly clean it off after sticking it up these petty cops asses!

  8. The govt hates people who don’t pay taxes. My son lives on a boat and they don’t want him to moor the boat in a bay… claiming the boats damage aquatic life. However, they are okay with him pulling up anchor and dropping it elsewhere… and theoretically he could trade places with another boat for the allotted days, and boats can keep taking places for the allotted days, but are doing more damage b/c they have to pull up anchor… rather than dropping anchor once, leave them alone and tether back to your already dropped anchor if you go sailing…. They just don’t want you living for free… anywhere.
And doesn’t it seem anti freedom that you have to pay the state to get married?!?

  9. Well that sucks, I didn't even know about that and I from the same county, Skagit County but I live in the next city over in Burlington. Now I'm curious if that includes the whole Skagit County area, I hope not cuz that's just controlling, walking over our rights.

  10. It sounds like theyre trying to possibly deter the city from being a homeless type camp which i understand why from what I'm seeing from some cities in CA. But the ordinance is very vague and creating confusion.

  11. The city of San Diego has specific verbiage that prohibits vehicle habitation in certain cases. I personally think the most important enforcement of vehicle habitation is within a residential area and public spaces designated day use only. Sleeping in a business parking lot, designated habitation zones, or anywhere there are no homes or open spaces used during daylight hours seems like a good way to allow van life folks to be able to sleep in their vehicle without disturbing anyone. The problem is how fine the line is between encampments and vehicle habitation. Paul is talking semantics, attempting to reason so he can go on and sleep anywhere he wants. Sedro-Wolley has miles upon miles of public land to camp. Why be a problem within the city limits when you can sleep in peace just a few miles east?

  12. Wow! Cali really doesn't give an F about human rights!! 🤮🤮🤮
Can we fight there M'rons don't think so,, help me now these A holes, what America is actually like!!! 🙃…
These m'Ron's are the be expected and resigned! These mf'ers are ready for anything! Be ready!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👍🤷

  13. Cop rolls up on a driver at a stop light nodding off after a long day at work.
Cop: "I'm going to need you move along sir"
Driver: "I should probably just pull over and take a quick nap"
Cop: "I'm going to need you to get back on the road for community safety."

    5 Minutes later

Cop: "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
Driver: "I'm tired and should have pulled over and taken a nap, because I'm not safely driving at this time?"
Cop: "How much have you had to drink tonight?" "Are there any drugs or grenade launchers I need to be worried about?"

  14. These guys are clowns…If you're excessively tired and cannot drive safely, you must sleep before moving on, or if you're a trucker and have exhausted your drivable hours, you must sleep by law…If you get in an accident because the cops made you move on while exhausted just sue the Hell out of this city for forcing you to drive while tired…I'm sure they'll change the law after paying out a HUGE LAWSUIT FOR NEGLIGENCE CAUSING BODILY INJURY OR DEATH…

  15. This is the first video by LackLuster that I get frustated with the Citizen instead of the cops. I am a fan of LackLuster and there been some victims of law officers that to be honest are a..h…. and i will still get frustated with the cops because of their behavior but in this video the cops were profesional, informative as much as posible or more than what you could expect from an public servant. You could tell that the officers just wanted to finish the conversation once they inform him that the store wanted him to move along and avoid any escalation, i did unsterstood everything the cops try to explain that yes he can park but not camp, even thouht they couln't explain when or how they can determine if he will be camping or just recharging his batterirs. if any he should complaint to the store management and even scalate it to corporate. LackLuster the tittle is misleading, but keep the good work, i am your fan

  16. Is ignorance of these laws an excuse for such acts by officials?

If we are to follow the letter of the law, (as they are sworn to do), this places officials who involve themselves in such unlawful acts in an unfavorable legal situation. For it is a felony and federal crime to violate or deprive citizens of their constitutionally protected rights. An area of serious consideration for every police officer is to understand that the most important law in our land which he has taken an oath to protect, defend, and enforce, is not state laws and city or county ordinances, but the law that supersedes all other laws — the U.S. Constitution. If laws in a particular state or local community conflict with the supreme law of our nation, there is no question that the officer's duty is to uphold the U.S. Constitution.
