Here's me in that same situation: I would've asked the cop IF he ran the trailer plates prior to pulling me over to see if the trailer I was hauling was reported as stolen. Then, if the cop said, "No" then I would tell him that not only did he NOT have probable cause to stop me but also the stop was illegal as I did not, nor was I, in the act of breaking any laws; traffic or otherwise. I would tell the cop that he is impeding my 4th Amendment rights and he's engaging a 'fishing' expedition hoping to catch a trailer thief, though the cop did nothing to prove that a crime had been committed and that he had a right to stop me. Bye officer!
