Reminder, people. If they actually have no legal basis for demanding ID, your legal claim against them for violating your rights is as valid if you surrender the license under clear and unambiguous threat of arrest as if you actually get arrested. Stopping short of getting arrested gets you home that night without potential for certain abuses that could be deliberately made worse due to their determination that you are a difficult person.
You don’t always have to go to jail to defend your rights, and it can save you additional charges/convictions in the off chance the officer actually has the legal basis to demand it.
