Since West Virginia didn't come into existence until 1863, these rifles were made in Harper's Ferry Virginia.

I’m a member of the Mississippi army national guard. I’m in a combat engineer unit, part of the 155th Brigade Combat Team. Our infantry battalion, 1/155 is the famous Mississippi Rifles, still going strong today 👍
I have just came into possession of a Harpers Ferry Mississippi Rifle with an 1853 date. The bore measures .59-.60 on my Calipers. I can barely tell that there is rifling in the barrel. Is there a way for sure to tell if it’s a .58 rifle or a “smooth” bore shotgun. I’m new to this era of firearms and black powder. This was handed down to me by my grandmother and I don’t know much about it. Thanks for the video
